Women and Children's Affairs Division


Regulation of the employment of women,young persons and children is the main function of the division. In this context this divison has been entrusted with enforcement of following legislation.

•  Employment of women,young persons and Children's Act no.47 of 1956

•  Maternity Benefits Ordinance no.32 of 1939

•  Factories Ordinance no.45 of 1942(Provisions relating to employment of women, young     persons and children )

•  Shop and office employees (Regulation of remuneration and employment) Act no.19 of 1945     (provisions relating to employment of women, young persons and children)

Followings are the main activities carried out by the Division

•  Inquire into complaints received with regard to violation of legal provisions pertaining to    employment of women, young persons and children.

•  Carry out awareness programs for female employees and general public on matters     oncerning employment of women and  children .

•  Carry out surveys on Working Women and Children.

•  Training and sensitizing officers.

•  Implement programmes under the ILO International programme on Elimination of child     Labour(IPEC).

•  Training and sensitizing officers attending to duties Pertaining to female employees and     children.

•  Implementation of a Project on post tsunami responses on children Employed and there     formal education.

•  National Plan of Action for children has been launched to create awareness among     Government officers and Public.

•  Activities on mass media in order to Propagate the issue regarding child Labour.
