Labour Statistics Division

The main responsibility of the Labor Statistics Division is to provide accurate and timely statistical information needed by the Department of Labor to make sound evidence-based decisions.


Main Functions of Labour Statistics Division

  1. Issuance of “Annual Report on Private Sector and Semi-Public Sector Employment”:

The report contains information on employment, working hours, earnings, and labor costs borne by employers in the private and semi-government sectors. To collect the necessary data for this purpose, a sample survey, selected according to the statistical methodology is conducted annually by the Labor Statistics Division.

  1. Issuance of “Annual Report on Outlook of Private Sector Labor Requirements”:

The Labor Statistics Division releases information on labor needs in the private and semi-public sectors by occupation, gender, age, and required qualifications based on a sample survey selected according to statistical methodology from 2023 onwards. For the year 2022, due to bad situation that existed in the country, this survey was started as research using a google form.

  1. Issuance of “Annual Report of Labor Statistics”:

The report is prepared with the support of many government agencies including the Department of Census and Statistics, and the Department of Labor and includes information on Sri Lanka's population, labor supply, earnings and living standards, and the enforcement of labor laws.

  1. Issuance of National Labour Indices:
  2. Issuance of relevant data as per request by national and international institutions.
